Huawei Mate 90 Pro Max

What if your smartphone could combine professional photography and a stunning display into a single device? The Huawei Mate 90 Pro Max makes that idea exciting with its 200MP periscope camera. This device also features a dual-layer OLED display and a massive 6,800mAh battery. Specifically, its variable-aperture main camera adapts to different lighting conditions. Meanwhile, 100W wired and 50W wireless charging keep downtime to a minimum. However, you can choose between the Standard Pro Max and the Collector’s Edition. This gives you two ways to experience Huawei’s flagship vision.

Features of Huawei Mate 90 Pro Max

The Huawei Mate 90 Pro Max combines flagship performance, advanced camera technology, and a distinctive design. Here are the key features worth exploring.

Design and Build Quality

The Mate 90 Pro Max features an iconic ring-shaped camera module that gives it a distinctive look. You can choose between the Standard Pro Max and Collector’s Edition. Both models share almost the same core specifications and features.

Notably, Huawei uses Kunlun Glass 3 on the front and introduces Kunlun Optical Glass for the camera bump. Its construction combines basalt and ultra-durable nylon fiber materials for added protection. According to Huawei’s claims:

• Camera-side drop resistance improves by 20 times
• Drop resistance increases by 50%
• Scratch resistance improves by 16 times
• Improved anti-reflective traits by 70%

Display

The handset features a large 6.9-inch dual-layer LTPO OLED display. It delivers a sharp 1320 × 2848 resolution, a smooth 120Hz refresh rate, and support for 1 billion colors. Moreover, HDR Vivid and BT.2020 support further enhance the viewing experience.

Huawei also claims a peak brightness of 12,000 nits (measured at an isolated spot during video playback only). The display’s 1440Hz PWM dimming can also help reduce visible flicker at lower brightness.

Camera

Photography is a major highlight of the Huawei Mate series. Its rear camera system includes a 50MP main sensor. This sensor features a variable aperture ranging from f/1.4 to f/4.0. This gives you more control over light intake in different shooting conditions.

The 200MP periscope telephoto camera offers 4x optical zoom, making distant subjects easier to capture. Meanwhile, the 40MP ultrawide camera covers a 120-degree field of view for landscapes, group photos, and architectural shots.

Notably, the phone introduces Huawei’s third-generation Red Maple camera technology. The system also includes laser autofocus and a color spectrum sensor.

>> One Important Note: The standard Mate 90 Pro Max does not support the newly launched Ruiying Z10 teleconverter accessory. Only the Huawei Mate 90 Pro Max Collector’s Edition is compatible with the snap-on Ruiying Z10 camera lens (no case required).

Performance and Processor

The Mate 90 Pro Max runs on the Kirin 9050 Pro chipset and HarmonyOS 7.0. Its processor uses a nine-core configuration, according to the provided specifications. This chip is associated with a 3D “LogicFolding” architecture. This is the world’s first mobile system-on-chip architecture. This approach focuses on chip design and integration.

Battery and Charging

A 6,800mAh battery powers the Huawei Mate 90 Pro Max. This large capacity provides ample space for long video sessions, photography, navigation, and everyday multitasking. When you need to recharge, the phone supports 100W wired charging and 50W wireless charging.

Software and Security

This device runs HarmonyOS 7.0. For security, it combines a side-mounted fingerprint sensor with Face ID functionality supported by a dedicated 3D depth-sensing camera. The depth sensor adds another layer to facial authentication. Meanwhile, on-device AI and specialized algorithms can improve recognition accuracy. However, app availability and compatibility may differ from those on Android phones with Google Mobile Services.

Modular Case Accessories

More interestingly, these devices come with modular building-block cases that let users mix and match different back panels. The bottom section of the case can accommodate functional modules. Depending on the available accessories, these may include fragrance pads, a fill light, a mirror, or a lint roller. This concept adds practical uses beyond basic phone protection.

Special Mention: Huawei Mate 90 Pro Max Collector’s Edition

The Huawei Mate 90 Pro Max Collector’s Edition takes smartphone photography in a different direction. A floating ring with three raised sections and four contact points. This allows the phone to attach an external camera lens directly, without requiring a separate case. This edition exclusively supports the Ruiying Z10 snap-on camera lens. With an f/2.0–4.5 aperture, PDAF, and OIS, it offers greater flexibility for capturing distant subjects with excellent image quality.

Despite all of these, its jade-inspired green back cover is its most distinctive feature. It catches the light like a gemstone, giving the phone a distinctive appearance.

• Jade-inspired green back cover
• Support for the Ruiying Z10 snap-on camera lens
• 50MP, 1-inch-type camera sensor
• 24–240mm focal length with continuous 10x optical zoom.
• f/2.0–4.5 variable aperture, PDAF, and OIS
